Dr. Newmark received his B.S. degree from Rutgers University College of Pharmacy and his M.D. degree from Duke University School of Medicine.
He completed his medical internship at George Washington University Hospital and his residency and fellowship at the University of Florida Shands Teaching Hospital. A research fellowship from Fight for Sight and the National Institutes of Health were awarded to him during his training. His research established Natamycin as a new treatment for fungal corneal ulcers. Natamycin is the only commercially available treatment for this disease and is prescribed by eye doctors all over the world. Dr. Newmark is a board certified ophthalmologist and presently holds academic Professorships at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He has published numerous articles on eye diseases in the scientific literature and presented his work at many professional meetings. Four ophthalmic textbooks include an authored chapter and he is the Executive Editor of three nationally published ophthalmic technician training manuals.
He is a past president of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology and the Palm Beach County Ophthalmology Society and served in leadership positions in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Florida Medical Association and Palm Beach County Medical Society. Dr. Newmark is the recipient of numerous professional awards on a local, State and National level for his excellence as a teacher, surgeon, leader and clinician that includes the Statesmanship Award, Community Service Award, Physicians Heroes in Medicine Award, Army Commendation Medal, Shaler Richardson’s Award, Leadership Award, Ophthalmologist of the Year Award and the Secretariat Award. He has been listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Florida Super Doctors, Guide to Top Doctor’s in America, Guide to America’s Top Ophthalmologists and Castle Connolly Best Florida Doctors.
Dr. Newmark has special interest in glaucoma, Dry Eye Syndromes, tearing and eyelid diseases and contact lenses. With over 45 years of ophthalmology practice he is an expert in second opinion consultations for all surgical and medical ocular conditions.
